I am a freelance scenographer and designer, and a drama / design workshop facilitator and teacher.
I design set and costumes for theatre, opera, live art performance and exhibitions, employing traditional design processes, as well as alternative, ensemble based devised-design processes. With devised design work I love to be active and involved in the generation of the performance, including working with actors and providing creative provocations, so that performance and design are symbiotically created.
I am especially interested in socially engaged arts practices in school or community settings, and arts within healthcare and well-being.
I have experience in various forms of theatre and performance, including; fringe theatre; large scale community theatre and opera with casts of over 130 intergenerational community members and professionals; touring including national school and venue tours; outdoor & promenade performances; devised work; new writing; period drama; children's theatre; interactive, immersive & participatory performance; exhibitions & installations.
I have built my career up mostly through being the lead / solo designer on all my projects, and working for years on low budget fringe theatre. Although I have done a bit of assisting for larger scale companies, like Punchdrunk, I find that I have loved the challenge of always working on my own designs, and have built up a wide ranging skill set in costume making, set building and practical knowledge which gives me a certain resourcefulness and a hands-on attitude. My experience in the ever-evolving state of devised theatre pieces, alongside practical resourcefulness, has helped me to be very collaborative and adaptable in my work.
As a Creative Facilitator, I have run workshops for people of all ages, abilities and developmental stages, working with arts organisations, county councils, theatre in education companies, Creative Partnerships, schools, and as a director / facilitator for Theatre in Education companies' 'Play in a Day' workshops.
More recently I am developing my own projects through research & development phases and community workshops.
